  Spanning the world, millions of people, thousands of events, both vittual and in-person will mark the World Rivers Day 2025  on September 28th, in what has become one of the largest environmental celebrations on the planet. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the event. With many of the World's rivers in a degraded state and facing increasing pressures associated with pollution , climate change and industrial development , more than 100 countries will participate in this year's activities. This year theme is  Waterways in our Communities . with an emphasis of protecting rivers that remains in an health state, while also striving to restore those that have been damaged in the past. Many event will also profile several sub-theme, such as the significant impact that climate change is having on many rivers, or the all-important link between the State of our rivers and the state of our oceans. Dear River Enthusiasts, World Rivers Day 2025 is finally upon us this weekend and it’s amazing to see the many different and creative ways in which people across the globe will be celebrating rivers . This year is our biggest celebration yet, with 1000s of events and millions of participants in well over 100 countries spanning 6 continents. Thank you for your amazing efforts on behalf of the world’s waterways! The importance of healthy rivers and clean water has never been more apparent. For all of us involved with World Rivers Day , it’s heartening to see the thousands of activities being planned; from smallscale family and neighborhood river cleanups - to organized paddling trips - to the Thirst Foundation’s World River Run - to river conferences and podcasts - to art displays and photo contests - to riverside celebrations , educational tours and habitat restoration projects - to public buildings and monuments such as BC Place illuminating blue in honor of WRD - The list goes o...

The celebration of  World Rivers Day  highlights the many values of our rivers, strives to increase public awareness, and encourages the improved stewardship of all rivers around the world. Rivers in virtually every country face an array of threats, and only through our active involvement can we ensure their health in the years ahead.
