The importance of healthy rivers and clean water has never been more apparent.
Dear River Enthusiasts,
World Rivers Day 2025 is finally upon us this weekend and it’s amazing to see the many different and creative ways in which people across the globe will be celebrating rivers. This year is our biggest celebration yet, with 1000s of events and millions of participants in well over 100 countries spanning 6 continents. Thank you for your amazing efforts on behalf of the world’s waterways! The importance of healthy rivers and clean water has never been more apparent. For all of us involved with World Rivers Day, it’s heartening to see the thousands of activities being planned; from smallscale family and neighborhood river cleanups - to organized paddling trips - to the Thirst Foundation’s World River Run - to river conferences and podcasts - to art displays and photo contests - to riverside celebrations, educational tours and habitat restoration projects - to public buildings and monuments such as BC Place illuminating blue in honor of WRD - The list goes on and on and on. So stay in touch and join the conversation through our social media channels. You can share photos or thoughts about the day by using #worldriversday - or tag us using @oneriverworld on your X (Twitter) posts, or @riverworld on Facebook. Lastly, a great congratulations to The Friends of the Chicago River on winning the prestigious 2025 Thiess International River Prize, in recognition for their outstanding work restoring the Chicago River watershed (USA) for people, water and wildlife. An honour well deserved!
The award was presented at the International River Symposium (organized by the International River Foundation), in Brisbane Australia! Fellow prize finalists included the Cumbria Rivers (UK), Klamath River (USA) and Vjosa River (Albania). Below are our social media and website links, 2025 global media release, along with the list of our sponsors, to whom we are very grateful.
Thank you again for your efforts to protect our waterways and have a Happy World Rivers Day! With best wishes, Mark Angelo, WRD Chair
